Recently, my friend over at Brock Street did a wonderful
post featuring his antique oval ironstone plates. I mentioned to him that our everyday dishes happened to be oval (that was the clue from the last post!) restaurant ware plates and he said he'd like to see pictures sometimes...he also said that none of his matched but that "they all liked hanging out together"! All of a sudden I realized that I had an oval party going on at my house too and even though they were all different, they got along famously and really enjoyed hanging out together! A new post had been born...thanks B!

I believe my love of all things oval began at the age of twenty when I was gifted a large set of restaurant ware dishes...eight of everything and then some, including the ovals plates. Little did I know at the time how much I would come to appreciate their particular shape not only in the kitchen and dining room, but also in my decor...but that's for another post.

The ovals quickly became the most used and most treasured out of all of dishes. Tough as nails, they've survived many a dinner party along with the daily use. They ended up being packed away for two years while we built our house (the first time - have to get to that soon) and we missed them terribly, we were spoiled by all that ovalness...round just didn't do it for us anymore. The image above is from our previous home, the one we had to tear down to build 24C...it was a fifties rambler...hence the pine cupboards.

These oval gratin dishes were part of the R.W. collection also. They're all packed away still except for one, who will be introduced to you in a bit.

Most in this oval grouping are out of storage now . The old house as you can see had white Formica counters...these guys didn't mind though, it reminded them of their youth.

Here's a few of them today...hanging out together in their new home, happy as can be!

Eventually some oval ironstone started joining the family...and even though they are era's apart, they all get along just fine.

Another type of restaurant ware I became enamoured with was from the Fire-King Jadeite line. This was right before Martha got the whole nation obsessed with it and I was fortunate enough to gather quite a lot of it before it became as expensive as gold. I loved the heaviness and the simplicity of it, and these two ovals that you see are my absolute favorite. They're called breakfast dishes and we use them pretty much every day.

Below are another favorite I started adding to the R.W. collection...also heavy and durable. The two top ovals are Buffalo China and the bottom platter is Homer Laughlin. I love the black scalloped detailing and ended up purchasing a few pieces on ebay several years ago, mostly in the Buffalo. Platters, soup plates, and berry bowls...these we use daily too.

The oval trio are the work horses of the bunch and continually hang out by the stove, ready to help at a moments notice when the cooking begins. They're my right hand ovals...they keep the 'mise en place' in place and also keep the marble counters safe from messy, gooey, and dangerous utensils...such as the lemon juice reamer.

Above are some chicken pot pie fixins ready to go!

Ovals also not only hang out near the stove, but on and above too...like the super heavy Le Creuset French oven that I use for pot roasts, beer braised briskets, and my mom's delicious German rouladen recipe.

Above is one of those little oval gratin dishes I showed you earlier which has now become the perfect spoon rest and next to it, is one of several Shenango China R.W. mini ovals that have been designated as S & P holders

Some of you might remember the
tea cupboard post...well, the ovals have been mingling quite happily in there also!

There are serving pieces...

A couple of old ironstone vegetable bowls...

Remember the platters from the previous post...much better picture this time around...no Photoshop finagling either! The newer and the older vintages are mixing nicely here.

Another oval ironstone tureen...this one holding napkin rings and a bottle cork. This photo was taken when I was 'messing around' for the last post....see Pam's little beehive pots in the background...the ovals even play well with the non-ovals, they're sweet like that!

So after putting this post together...I happily realized that unknowingly, I'd been collecting ovals all these years. I knew I had always liked them and that I'd been drawn to them, but never fully realize that I had also been collecting them...now I know!

I can't wait to see the ones that have been packed away these past five years...it will be like an oval Christmas when those boxes get opened.... but for now, I'll enjoy the ones we have set free and in turn watch them...enjoy each others company!

Love all the oval loveliness:)
I love the oval dishes, especially the green Fire King. Your kitchen is beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
Love the jadeite. As a non-Martha person, I had no idea. It's gorgeous. And I've been thinking that an oval Le Creuset would be great for braised chickens of all sorts.
I simply LOVE your oval plates. Thanks for sharing your gems with us. They have a simple elegance about them. I particularly like your vintage oval pieces. Should you ever tire of them, I would gladly purchase them from you. Just looking at them made my heart swoon.
Enjoy, as I know you will!
Adore your collection and it is very extensive!! The Jadeite are fabulous. The Oval urn with lemons inspires a painting!

Hello:
What a very splendid, and attractive, mix of oval plates and dishes which are clearly made good, and everyday, use of.
We very much like the miscellany of your collection, believing to have all matching of everything to be very newly married and somewhat uninteresting.
Beautiful dishes! Love the kitchen too!
M
wonderful ovals. set apart a little from the traditional round shape. a lovely change.
donna
I have a little oval something to send your way!
Just e-mail me your address when you have a moment.

Daisy...thank you sweety! :)
Gayle...thank you, the kitchen is my favorite room in the house!
Purple Flowers...you will be the first person I contact!! If you want to swoon some more...visit ebay, ovals galore!! xo
Karena...I love the idea of painting the lemons in the ironstone ...what a truly wonderful thought!! xo
Jane & Lance...I am also of the same thought that everything matching makes for a terribly uninteresting view...it actually makes me feel claustrophobic and a 'bit unwell' (I heard a Frenchman say that once about sterile hotel rooms!). xo
Meg...thank you, maybe we could have coffee here one day! xo
Donna...so glad you think so too, funny how I'm drawn to them so much! xo
pve...my stomach is all a-flutter now after reading your comment...I'm so surprised and intrigued, not to mention grateful, what ever it may be! xo
Wow! you have the best collection ever. where to start...well, i love em all. this is the kind of kitchen i love being in. all the different finds, stories, memories and the hodgepodge of treasures.

B....So happy you like all the ovals...thanks again for the inspiration! And since we don't really have any furniture yet, we'll have an hors devours party okay...the little ovals will work perfect for that! ;)
And you are so welcome, and so sweet! I'm glad you liked the cards...and the touch of sparkle...they went to a such wonderful home! xoxo
Pam...Chicken pot pie it is...you can bring the chairs! ;) And thank you!!! xoxo
Love the one the lemons are sitting in! And I know I've said it before, but your kitchen is beautiful! I am quite fond of cabinets where the doors nest into the cabintry like that...I wonder if there is a word for them? Lovely post!
Hi! So nice to "meet" you...thanks for stopping by and for your kind words....I was admiring your oval plates and other pretty serving dishes but really admiring your absolutely gorgeous Calcutta gold marble:) LOVE it...its just the way I like it, very clean lots of white...soft veining,etc.....gorgeous..and I love the subways you put too..very classic. I am your newest follower:)
Peony...thank yo so much!! The word for this type of cabinetry is "inset" as opposed to "overlay". Our cabinet guy did a great job and we love the look, although it did cost a bit more. xo
Enchanted...Hello!! thank you so much for the follow, I'm thrilled! We looked for a year for these slabs and we're so happy with them. I wanted a lot of white also, the busy ones made me a bit queasy in the stoneyards so I knew they wouldn't be good in the kitchen! You'll find your dream slabs...theyre' out there, I promise! xo
Peony...It just came back to me that the other type of cabinetry styles are also called framed & frameless...mine are the inset. :)
Your new kitchen is gorgeous!! I love the stove top with the shelving unit above it. Aren't we girls so attached to our dishes. Since we've moved often, I know what it is like to gently unpack our "loved ones".
Love all your oval dishes and your kitchen is FABULOUS!! My mother-in-law had a wonderful collection of old oval ironstone dishes - just love them!
What a wonderful collection of oval china you have! There is a certain elegance about an oval plate.
I particularly like the green ones, and the old ironstone ones too.
Your kitchen looks lovely by the way!!
Gill xx
I love oval dishes too and I am very partial to old diner ovals. I also was lucky to find a set of that Buffalo wear that you own complete with cups and bowls. Love all your variety of dishes.
