Spring finally seems to have poked her head out of the clouds, and I thought I would do the same with a bit of spring cleaning around 24C, as the sun is always such a wonderful companion for such endeavors, and somehow makes tidying up so much more pleasant .
The first task I had the notion to tackle was the fluffing up of my dried hydrangeas, along with a vigorously cleaning of their 'vases' and what they sat on. The thought of replacing them back into their shiny new nooks, unharmed, dust free, and happy...spurred me on.

I'm sure that many of you, my kindred spirits, can attest to the fact of what joy can come from the sprucing up of something in your home. It can be a lovely form of therapy that provides a lift of countenance, erases troubles and cares (at least momentarily), and puts a sweet touch of order where there is disorder, calm where there is chaos, and pretty where more pretty is needed.
Also, it lasts a while...as a wonderful reminder of something positively accomplished.
Also, it lasts a while...as a wonderful reminder of something positively accomplished.

I was somewhat surprised by just how much I loved the combination of toaster and hydrangea...one just never knows what the creative spirit is going to take a fancy to.

After hand washing the containers, an old ironstone vase and one of my 'mystery vases', I left them to dry all day on the counter while I tidied up other parts of the house.

And honestly, I thought the hydrangeas were so pretty laying on the marble, that I actually just left them there until evening started setting in...I didn't want to pick them up. Thank heavens Mr. 24 wasn't around so I could freely leave my 'pretty mess' to my hearts content.

When I couldn't justify leaving them one minute longer, they were finally placed very carefully into their clean and shiny homes, then brought back to their special spots, which were now sparkling as well.

Both of these 'bouquets' have special meaning and they've become part of the household. The one above, was given to me by a very dear neighbor who lived in the same little cottage community we called home while building 24C. That was a very special two years and the hydrangeas remind me of that treasured time.

You can see them above (if you squint)...sitting atop of the little armoire in our little cottage living room, our home away from home. The gift of the hydrangea's at the time meant the world to me, that was about three years ago now.
The second bouquet came from this wonderful white hydrangea bush which we've had for a very long time, but sadly this past fall, it might have gotten pruned just a tad too much, and we're not quite sure it's going to come back. We've had it from a baby and I'm desperately sorry we might lose it...anyhoo, that's why this second bouquet is so special.
Please try not to get a cavity while looking at this next image...

It's extra sweet!
Those are the same white hydrangeas. Initially as they began to dry, they turned a bright neon pink and green (see the glowing photo below)...then they faded to a lovely pastel version of those colors, which I love. The variance in color this flower can produce always amazes me.
The little shell doll is one of my most treasured possessions. My daddy brought her back for me from San Fransisco when I was about four or five, it's amazing she's survived this long. Her backside has a missing piece but from the front she's still perfect, and for now, she's hanging out with the hydrangeas, it's all a bit weddingy isn't it?!
In the photo above, she's looking down and has a little frown on her face...like Jane Eyre left at the alter.

(Glowing-neon hydrangeas)

Above, Jane is looking up in shock...she can't believe Rochester had a crazy wife locked up in the tower all this time...what's to become of them?!!
See! Spring cleaning allows for the imagination to once again freely roam...unhinged and unencumbered by the dull grime that life sends our way every now and then.
If you've had any wonderful spring cleaning notions recently that grabbed ahold and blessed you more than you possibly thought it could...please do share, it would be fun to know what tidying up task brought a bit of pleasure to your particular world.
Happy Spring Fluffing Everyone!

Hello Jessica:
What a wonderful post. How we love the hydrangea heads and to hear the story behind your very special ones is so intriguing. They really do look lovely in their newly restored containers.
Spring really does inspire one to take a fresh look at everything around the house and to effect little improvements. Such fun!
I'm transfixed by your black Dualit, I have the cream version but I love yours.
The hydrangeas are blooming lovely.
One of the best post titles ever, Jessica!
And could you just remove the plug from your toaster (buy a new one for making toast if you really must) and use it to display your lovely hydrangeas? Sure, normal people would laugh but everyone out here in Blogtopia would swoon in admiration.
Memories . . . the gifts we gather along the way . . . "fluffing" them up a bit is good for our soul . . .
I spent all of this past weekend doing basically the same thing, everything cleaned and aired out. Bring on spring!!
Pearl
Those are so pretty, you could do a whole room in those colors.....They looked great just strewn over the marble! Maryanne xo
Dear Jessica,
I adore hydrangeas....always have, but, even more so now as our son and daughter-in-law got married, 3 years ago, in October and she had hydrangeas in her bouquet. They always remind me of that wonderful day.
....and, I know what you mean about cleaning things and making the house look lovely. When I've finished, I always light two or three fragrant candles as my finishing touch.
Enjoy your lovely fluffed up hydrangeas and the memories that they bring. XXXX
Jane & Lance~ Thank you...the hydrangeas continue to enjoy being in their freshened up containers...and I'm truly happy you enjoyed the stories, it was fun to recall and think upon them. xo
Tabitha~ I went back and forth on cream verses black...took me forever to decide, I loved the cream one! Does yours toast evenly, mines a little wonky sometimes? xo
Mise~ Thank you!! Your brilliant idea of turning my toaster into a perpetual vase has my mind spinning...just imagine, to be able to pull that off, *with* the support of all blogtopia...such a thrilling notion!! I wonder if Mr. 24 would notice...xo
Lynne~ YOu are so right...it's the memories that we gather along the way, and the mementos of them are what help to keep them alive and very present! xo
Pearl~ Hello!! I love hearing that you were in the same spring mode as I...now we both can enjoy the fresh and seasonal fruits of our fluffing labors! xo
Beadboard~ Thank you...you are so right! It would be lovely to have a room done in all those faded colors...lets work on that!
I'm thinking a marble or alabaster vase might be needed now to hold the flowers, either that or they're going to get 'fluffed up' more often so that I can enjoy them on the marble again. xo
Jacqueline~ What a lovely memory to have tied to hydrangeas...thank you for sharing that. They are so perfect for weddings, the white ones almost look a wedding dress in themselves!
And your idea of lighting candles after a fresh cleaning sounds like a very peaceful way to enjoy your newly freshened up home, the perfect way to end a day of spring cleaning. xo
It's so strange hearing about Spring when we are heading into Autumn..or Fall as you call it! Your hydrangeas are gorgeous, I hope the white ones come back! You always leave the loveliest, thoughtful comments - thank you for the one about our friend. It sounds like you know exactly what we're going through. I'm so sorry about your dear sister-in-law. It's very hard to take when it's sudden and they are so young. Have a lovely Spring weekend..Rachael xxx
Rachael~ And you have a lovely 'Fall' weekend...thoughts will be with you. ♥
Oh I LOVE Hydrangeas! You've inspired me to make sure that I dry some this Summer. They look absolutely spectacular - and yes - VERY pretty on your work top and in front of your toaster - Great post!
Lovely - I need to do exactly the same!! Some of my dried hydrangea have seen better days and may need to be replaced but I have so many arrangements of them around, I don't think they'll be missed!!
hi Jessica! Your ironstone filled container looks lovely! I have a small arrangement with dried hydrangeas in the reading room... they were fresh when I cut them, last Fall, and I also placed some fresh cut ivy and some green potato vine. The hydrangeas dried, but the ivy and potato vine are still alive (I just keep adding water) it's a fun combo, the alive and dried! And, now I'm excited to have a jump on potato vine in my garden pots, as it takes a while to see in plant shops here.
xojoan
i adore the mystery vase!!!
i wish i had spring where i live.
xx :)
lovely.... and isnt it fun to see them budding outside???
enjoy the sunshine today friend.... miss you...xoxo
Hello Jessica
I love the effect of the reflections of the hydrangeas on the toaster. It would make a beautiful still life painting. Well done on Spring cleaning, I have not had much time of late but will shortly.
Have a delightful week
Helen xx
Mrs. Sutton~ I'm thrilled that you're going to dry some hydrangeas now...you'll love them! So happy you enjoyed the post! xo
Quintessence~ I love that you have so many hydrangea bouquets around! Mine sat untouched for a very long time, but they seemed to really like being fluffed around a bit, they actually seemed to grow! xo
Joan~ I'm truly fascinated by your alive and dried combo!! I'd love to see it, sounds so very Edwardian and amazing, I might have to try it, thanks so much for sharing, I just never knew something like that could even be done! xo
Renee~ Thank you for stopping by, I'm thrilled that you visited and that you like the vase...I still don't know what these vases were there former lives...still quite the mystery! xo
Pam~ I hope I get to see ours bud...I've been afraid to look lately..but the garden has been loving the sun...and so have I, it's so beautiful...today was amazing!
I miss you too and am in desperate need of a 'You' & Ticking fix - soon.
I'll be in touch... xoxo
Helen~ Your artists eye is wonderful...the reflection of the flowers in the toaster *is* beautiful, almost watery...I hadn't focused in on it before but now I am, and I agree, it *would* make for a very unique and interesting painting, and I think a pretty one!
Wishing you a delightful week as well! xo
I'm a great believer in "fluff". Have a good Easter!
Your dried hydrangeas are beautiful, and extra special because of the memories they evoke.! I am amazed at how that beautiful white one can end up such gorgeous colours.
I too love hydrangea heads and have lots around the house, but some of mine have not kept their colour well - how do you do yours, do you have any tips? Do you pick them at a certain time?
Have a great Easter Jessica
Gill xx
how utterly delightful...wish my white 'rescue' hydranger would bloom once more...maybe this year...happy easter!!
Linnea~ Cute! Happy Easter to you too!!! :)
Gilly~ I never do anything special to mine, I just let them dry out in the vase...that's it. I never add more water though...maybe that's the trick!
Wishing you a wonderful Easter as well!!! xo
Young At Heart~ Hello...so happy you visited! Wishing you all the best with your 'rescue'!
Happy Easter!!! xo
Hello Jessica ~ I adore how you let your imagination flow and you treasure all the simple, beautiful things in life. Sprucing things up always makes me feel better too. When I'm stressed, you will find me scrubbing, or digging in the garden. Maybe that's why the house in Houston was so clean?! I love hydrangeas and them laying amongst your gorgeous white marble countertops would make my imagination soar too. Wishing you both a wonderful Easter weekend. I hope the sun peeks out to wish you all well. xo xo Deb & Buffy!
Therapeutical cleaning. Yes, I know it. It can be a great help, and with a nice result. Something is clean in house and in soul.
I love hydrangeas, but in our garden they don't grow very well.
The combination of toaster and hydrangeas on the photograph indeed is great.
First day of eastern is gone. I wish you a very happy nice second eastern day.
In Holland it is cold and raining. But we had beautiful days of early spring. So, I must not complain. Greetings from Geri and say hello to your beautiful little Jane from me.
deb & Buffy~ Thank you!! I love that we're kindred spirits in the 'nesting' area...not to mention amny other areas!
Hope you had a wonderful Easter as well...and had some Scotch Eggs to boot!
xo Jessica & Ginger :)
Geri~ Little Jane says 'hello' back...she loves your Jane blog and is always asking me to read it to her! I should really teach her to read though...but I don't think her little chenille wire arms could type very well!
Hope you had a lovely Easter and that the sun decides to visit and stay!
xo J~
