Opening up the latest issue of Country Living, I was not only thrilled to see the article showcasing Neko Case's wonderfully eclectic and beautiful farmhouse, but I was equally thrilled to see that Neko and I shared the same Mushroom Pot!

Do you see it? Sitting on her kitchen counter next to her very cool vintage stove?

There it is...

I purchased mine at Anthropologie several years ago prior to building 24Corners, and packed it away in the hopes of one day using the little pot in our new kitchen as a utensil holder, just like Neko. But after two years with 24C's completion not yet on the horizon, and us moving to a different, temporary location where I'd be able to use some of my things, I freed my little pot from it's storage packing box, and chose to use it instead as a foresty sort of home for a little maiden hair fern that had been struggling in a pot obviously not to it's liking.

The little fern thrived in it's new home! I put some smallish rocks on the bottom of the mushroom pot for drainage purposes as there wasn't any hole for such purpose...and being that ferns love a bit of excess moisture, it was perfect...and a very happy match!

What goes better together than mushroom's and ferns anyway...a natural pairing if there ever was one, wouldn't you agree?

I love the two above...they look a bit like mother and child. ♥

Here is the mushroom's view into the kitchen (or a wee little person's that happens to be sitting on our table top), where the other reason for not using the pot as a utensil holder sits.

Right there next to the stove...

My beloved Guy Wolff pot that I'd had and used *forever* as a utensil holder. It was purchased at Smith & Hawken (oh, how I miss them) for a very good price as it has quite the chip inside rim, which made it perfect for this task.

The thought of using anything else, and of separating long time friends (the utensils and the pot) after so many years, just didn't feel right.

I keep a folded piece of paper toweling on the bottom to cushion the dropping in of the utensils...and so far, so good...no damage yet after fourteen years!

The pot and fern have only recently been placed on the dining table (which I'm hoping we'll find the leaf for soon, it's still hiding in the storage unit). They had been living on the corner of the fireplace hearth for the past year or so, and I thought they might be getting a bit bored, so I gave them a new vantage point...we'll see how they like it, especially the fern.

I've only focused here on this one tiny, little shared piece of pottery in Neko's farmhouse, but there is soooo much more to be seen and admired! She loves design as well as designing, and has a wonderfully quirky and sweet style sensibility that just permeates every square inch of her home. It reminds me a bit of
Sheryl Crow's Hollywood home, which also has the same kind of unique, personal, and vintage air about it. I wonder if they've ever hit the flea markets together, now wouldn't that be a fun outing?! They did share the stage together
here (my favorite Neko song~extremely touching)...and I bet they did a little design chatting back stage, love to be a fly on that wall!

You can read about and see Neko's amazing home in the New Country Living magazine or, as it's not yet posted on their website...you can take a peak at it
here...enjoy!

I love your fern plant and its beautiful home. So glad you brought it out to see instead of wrapped in paper. I noticed numbers alongside each mushroom; I wonder what they are.
Target sells a few Smith & Hawken items.
Hello Jessica
I love your mushroom pot and thank you for including how you used stones at the bottom of the container. I will be off and looking in my cupboard to see how I can do this.
The fern and mushrooms is perfect.
I love how you find a new purpose for items.

I LOVE your little mushroom pot with the maiden hair fern and the Wolff pot looks perfect against the marble. What fun it is to get ideas . . .
Love your mushroom pot! Very pretty. And your kitchen is lovely. Kit
Purple Flowers~ I think the little pot was happy to see the light! The little numbers are also on the large chalk mushroom print in the background, both are from French botanical studie books of mushrooms that were used in schools. xo
Helen~ I'm so glad you like the pot! I've used that rock trick several times and it works like a charm...please let me know what treasure you find to repurpose as a planter, I'd love to know! xo
Lynne~ Thank you!!! I've always loved finding different uses for things...it gives me an excuse to make coveted items useful and 'needed'! xo
Kit~ Thank you...xoxo
So much to love!! The little fern plant is just adorable:)
SimpleDaisy~ You're an angel, thank you!!! ♥
Love your little pot and your kitchen! I miss Smith & Hawken too! I almost always got a bargain when I went in to that store. We even had one in our town, New Canaan.
Good news, Jessica: owning the same mushroom-pot as a featured person makes you a global international design star.
I know this because ages ago a kind person sent me a Canadian design magazine, in which I found an article on an Australian design cushion on whose sofa was the same cushion as I have.
Since then the phone hasn't stopped ringing, the lecture tours and book-signings are exhausting, and I have had to have the cushion constantly monitored via security camera.
Likewise, your mushroom pot may require a bit of extra insurance now? And you will be needing new sunglasses to go out incognito. Blessings are so mixed, aren't they?
Annie~ Smith & Hawken was one of my escape mecca's...it was unique and gave me the gardening bug like nobody's business...love for them to make a comeback, highly doubtful though...at least I have my pot (and a few other things). xo
Mise~ I expect Neko herself to show up at my door any day now wanting to become my BFF because we share the same pot! She has a housefull of Maidenhair ferns too, so I know *for sure* she'll be showing up! We'll go shopping for those new sunglasses on our first BFF outing...maybe we'll get a pair for the pot too, now that fame is on the way. I feel very prepared for stardom due to your tips...thank you!!
Also, I wouldn't want to bother your cushion for an autograph, but could you please say hello from the pot and I...oh, forgive me, the kitchen pot would like to be in on the greeting too (I believe he's feeling a bit left out).
There's a knock at the door...I think she's here...toodles! xo
i love the mushroom pot... and all of the views of your amazing kitchen! xoxo
Pam~ The kitchen would love to meet you in person...and so would the pot! Soon... xoxo

I love your mushroom pot and I always love seeing photos of your home Jessica. Just sad I couldn't squeeze in the time to come see it in person. It does give me something to look forward to next visit home; to see you and to see Pam again!! I really fancy the delicate fern in your pot, it's perfect!! xo xo
Deb~ When you're in town next, it would be a dream to have you and Pam over...it would be wonderful to while-away the hours with you both again, still one of my favorite days ever!
