Last week,
A Perfect Gray did a marvelous post on wall textured rooms and I had instantly recognized some of those textures...they were glue walls. I know this to be true because our previous house, the one we had lived in for ten years (and finally tore down to build our new house), had them.

They were in the dining room and used to be covered over by very old (yucky) wall paper...hence the glue! We grew to love these walls with their nicotine stained, french bistro (think Balthazar's in NYC or Le Pichet in Seattle) patina, and everyone who saw them asked how we had "done them".

(Balthazar's - photo unknown, have had saved for a long time)

Le Pichet - (seattledining.com)

Sometimes...in soft natural light, they looked like washed linen or even sea grass. Who knew that this 50's shoebox rambler could ever hold such a treasure. We tried to think of ways to save them for the new house but to no avail, so...maybe one day, in the future, I will put up some wallpaper, wait thirty or so years for the glue to age to perfection, and then once again...have my beautiful glue walls.

For years, I painted walls faux finishes, murals and patinas that looked as if they had always been there.
I love how aged walls only get better with time, like good wine.
Good luck with your walls-

The ultimate in re-cycling ~ appreciating the beauty of the aging process.
they really are amazing and look perfectly distressed and aged. magic i must say.
have a great day....
pve~ I'd love to see your walls...that would make a great post, I bet they were beautiful!
Jacqueline~ I never thought of it as re-cycling...but you're so right!
And Brock...so glad you liked them (they *must* be cool!) And thanks so much...the day was great, hope yours was as well! :)
I love how they look like linen...my fave fabric! Last time while in NYC..I walked past Balthazar's.... the smells...ooohhh la la! Should have gone in to see it! Have a Great Day!
awesome post. those walls really looked great; know you hated to leave them. so funny how things turn out, no? we gotta be attuned to what can come of not-so-great initial circumstances.....(your cool wall texture from not-so-cool wallpaper)
Ivy~ Going to Balthazar's is a 'top of the list' place for me to visit! The food as well as the decor is supposed to be amazing.
Perfect Gray~ Thank you! I think your special Amelia head fits the "not so great initial circumstances but kinda cool now" catagory...although I'm sure she was a much better initial keeper than the wallpaper we had!
